It’s always a difficult time when I leave for military duty. It doesn’t matter if it’s for a weekend or a few weeks the feelings have always been the same. Three things come to mind:
- What if I’m needed and I’m so far away.
- What if something happens I could have prevented.
- What if this is the last time I see loved ones.
These are tough thoughts because I want to be there for my family, friends, and company no matter what. That feeling is what also keeps driving me toward military duty. I want to be a service to people. One of the greatest compliments a person can give me is that they called needing help and I showed up…
I doubt my kids ever read this but that’s a lesson that I have instilled in them from the beginning. Do what you are suppose to do and help people less fortunate. Both of my daughters have grasped this completely. Both help people to no end. Makes me extremely proud.
Recently, I had this conversation with my son. It went like this.
Me – Teagan, when I’m away from the house you gotta step up (he is 4). Always take care of your momma and protect our home.
Teagan – That’s right DaDa. I’ll protect our house and take care of Momma. I’m really good against small predators. Copy?
Me – Copy that son.
When all else fails. Do what you are suppose to do and… just show up!

I love this.
